Joining a series of extremely sought-after innovative coins with operational centrepieces, this striking 2oz silver coin is a unique tribute to an ancient civilisation and a pivotal development in commerce. An ancient 6,400 kilometre passage connecting China, the Middle East and Europe, the Silk Road served as a hub for world trade for thousands of years and is often associated with the abacus, the first known portable counting device. Merchants who traded silks, spices and other foods used the wooden counting frame to keep track of goods being bought and sold. Still used in China today, the abacus remains an important tool and our connection to a significant period in history.
Featuring an antique finish, the coin is inset with an operational abacus. The reverse design depicts travellers riding camels making their way along the Silk Road. Items that were typically traded, such as pottery, silk, plants, paper, fragrances and spices are represented in the foreground. Also included in the design is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The coin is housed in a latex display case and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
